The Bridge Street Bridge ("Bridge") is a valued historic feature in the City of Arroyo Grande and serves as a primary thoroughfare and landmark in the City’s Village area. During its service life of over 100 year, the Bridge has developed age-related deficiencies that will cause closure if not addressed. ( See Existing Conditions (PDF) ) The project need is to provide a rehabilitated bridge that will increase the load carrying capacity and also improve public safety. If the bridge is not rehabilitated, the condition will continue to deteriorate and eventually bridge closure will be required.
The City has awarded a construction contract for the rehabilitation of the Bridge. Construction will occur between June and December 2020. The Bridge will be closed during this time but a temporary bridge for non-motorized traffic will be provided.
The rehabilitated bridge will look much the same as the existing bridge as no structural changes are being made to the members of the existing green trusses. In order to meet current safety standards, vehicle railing will be installed to protect the trusses from vehicle strikes and additional lattice will be placed outside the sidewalk handrails to reduce the size of the openings.
